Greater Miami Youth Symphony -
Directed by Huifang Chen

As a dynamic and diverse musician, violinist and conductor, Huifang Chen enjoys a dual career as a performer and an educator. A graduate from the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, she studied violin with Jascha Brodsky. At present, Ms. Chen is the Music Director of the Greater Miami Youth Symphony (since 2008) and a violin professor at the New World School of Arts in Miami. She was the interim Director of Orchestra at Florida International University (2009-2010), the Associate Conductor of the Florida Youth Orchestra (2006-2008), and a violin and chamber music professor at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami (2004-2009). Ms. Chen has guest conducted the Alhambra Orchestra, Ars Flores Symphony, Broward Symphony Orchestra, Four County Honors Orchestra and University of Miami’s Frost Symphony, among others. She studied conducting with Thomas Sleeper and has participated in master classes and workshops with Marin Alsop, Jorge Mester, John Farrer and Donald Thulean. Her conducting debut has taken her to concert halls such as the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami and Carnegie Hall in New York City. On the podium, she has collaborated with such diverse artists as the Amernet String Quartet, Glenn Basham, Elizabeth Caballero, Robert Davidovici, Ross Harbaugh, Kemal Gekic, Nestor Torres and Ira Sullivan.

The 2012 world premiere of Thomas Sleeper’s Violin Concerto was written for her and the Greater Miami Youth Orchestra. The South Florida Classical Review said: “Her dark tonal shadings and rich vibrato fit the late romantic glint of the first two movements like a glove. In the barn-burning finale, Chen summoned the speed and articulation to sail through the multiple hurdles. Combining fire and finesse, Chen gave an exceptional performance of this intense new showpiece.” In May 2012, she recorded the concerto with the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, and the CD of this recording was released in January, 2014 on Albany Label.
